Did you know?

Private health insurance covers Acupuncture

Healing Pathways Therapy Clinic is a member of the AFPA, the oldest and largest professional body for practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Ireland, and is fully insured. Acupuncture treatments are covered under the following health insurance companies amongst others.

What to expect from an acupuncture session?

The initial treatment will usually last about one hour, and additional treatments can last from 30 to 45 minutes. An initial medical questionnaire will be required to be filled out by the patient. It will include questions about the patient’s medical history, lifestyle, and current complaints.

Some questions may seem irrelevant to the patient but the practitioner uses them as part of diagnostic tools. A treatment plan is discussed and the first treatment will commence.

What are the needles like?

The needles are ultra fine, disposable, and sterile. The most commonly used needle is .25mm width needle. The are usually inserted 1-3mm into the body, this does depend on the are of the body being treated.

What will I feel? Will it hurt?

No it will not hurt. Some individuals will feel a slight prick sensation as the needle is inserted, while others will feel nothing at all. After insertion a heavy or distended feeling around the needle may be felt, this indicates the arrival of qi. Again this is not always felt by the patient.

What other techniques may be part of my treatment?

During an acupuncture treatment cupping and/or Moxa may be used, but this depends on the patient and the condition being treated.

Treatment plans

Usually 3-6 treatments are generally recommended, but this does depends on the nature, severity of the condition. If however it is a long standing condition for many years the treatment time frame can be longer before any results are achieved.
